Job Description
Medical Director
MD | DO | APRN with Full Practice Authority
Chicago, IL • South Loop
About Us
Our MedSpa is a boutique luxury nail salon and medical spa opening in Chicago’s South Loop. We offer a full range of medical aesthetic services including neurotoxins, dermal fillers, biostimulators, PRF treatments, Pico laser, microneedling, and medical-grade skincare—all delivered in a warm, elevated, non-clinical environment. We are seeking a Medical Director to provide clinical oversight and ensure all services meet the highest standards of safety and compliance.
The Role
This is a part-time oversight role—not a full-time clinical position. You will serve as our Medical Director, providing the clinical supervision, protocol development, and regulatory compliance oversight required to operate a medical spa in Illinois. You will work closely with the owner and our nurse injector to ensure all medical aesthetic procedures are performed safely, ethically, and within scope. On-site presence is required periodically (monthly or as needed), with availability by phone or electronically during operating hours for consultation on clinical questions or complications.
Responsibilities
Clinical Oversight & Delegation
• Provide medical oversight for all aesthetic procedures performed, including neurotoxin injections, dermal fillers, biostimulators, PRF/EZ Gel treatments, Pico laser, microneedling, and medical-grade chemical peels
• Establish and maintain written delegation protocols for the nurse injector (RN/NP/PA) and aesthetician performing delegated medical procedures—protocols must be available to IDFPR upon request
• Establish Good Faith Exam (GFE) protocols and determine delegation of initial patient examinations to the nurse injector prior to first-time treatments (injectables, laser, microneedling)
• Serve as the supervising physician for collaborative practice agreements as required by Illinois law
• Provide on-site supervision for any ablative laser procedures; maintain phone/electronic availability for non-ablative procedures and injectables during operating hours
• Conduct periodic on-site visits (minimum monthly) to observe treatments, review charts, and meet with clinical staff
• Ensure a licensed health care professional is on-site whenever the aesthetician performs delegated medical procedures (microneedling) per IDFPR requirements
Protocols & Compliance
• Develop, approve, and maintain written treatment protocols and standing orders for all medical aesthetic services
• Establish emergency protocols including vascular occlusion response, allergic reaction management, anaphylaxis, and when to refer to ER
• Ensure compliance with all Illinois IDFPR regulations (including December 2024 medspa memo), OSHA standards, HIPAA requirements, and Illinois Medical Practice Act
• Review and approve the medspa service menu, contraindication guidelines, patient selection criteria, and informed consent documents for every procedure
• Establish treatment parameters, maximum dosing guidelines, and appropriate treatment intervals for all injectable and laser services
• Approve all new services, devices, or product lines before they are offered to clients
• Ensure proper medical record-keeping and documentation standards are maintained for all treatments
Quality Assurance & Training
• Conduct periodic chart reviews and clinical audits to ensure treatment quality and documentation standards
• Provide clinical mentorship and training support to the nurse injector and aesthetician
• Verify and document that all staff performing delegated procedures have received appropriate training (required by IDFPR for delegation)
• Review and address any adverse events, complications, or client complaints—maintain adverse event documentation and reporting procedures
• Ensure all clinical staff maintain current licensure, certifications, and malpractice insurance
• Approve continuing education plans for clinical staff
Strategic Collaboration
• Advise on new treatment offerings, devices, and clinical expansion opportunities
• Collaborate with the owner on medspa growth strategy from a clinical safety perspective
• Support marketing efforts where appropriate—review medical claims, approve before/after usage, and ensure advertising compliance
What We’re Looking For
• Active Illinois MD, DO, or APRN (with full practice authority) license in good standing (required)
• Board certification in dermatology, plastic surgery, emergency medicine, family medicine, or internal medicine (preferred)
• Minimum 2 years of experience in medical aesthetics, dermatology, or plastic surgery—or current medical director experience at another medspa
• Strong working knowledge of injectable treatments (neurotoxins, fillers, biostimulators), PRF, laser devices (including Pico laser), and clinical skincare procedures
• Familiarity with Illinois IDFPR medspa regulations, the December 2024 IDFPR/IDPH medspa memo, delegation requirements, and collaborative practice agreements
• Understanding of Good Faith Exam (GFE) requirements and how to establish GFE delegation protocols
• Knowledge of emergency protocols for aesthetic complications (vascular occlusion, anaphylaxis, nerve injury, infection)
• Understanding of ablative vs. non-ablative procedure classifications and corresponding on-site supervision requirements
• Active malpractice insurance coverage (required)
• Comfortable with a part-time oversight model—this is not a full-time clinical role
• Responsive and reliable—available by phone during business hours for clinical questions
• Collaborative, approachable demeanor—our team should feel comfortable calling you
Bonus (Nice to Have)
• Existing medical director experience at one or more medspas in Illinois
• Experience with Pico laser or other laser/light-based devices
• Experience developing medspa-specific informed consent forms and treatment protocols from scratch
• Familiarity with Illinois medspa ownership structure requirements and MSO (Management Services Organization) models
• Willingness to occasionally perform treatments or consultations on-site (compensated separately)
• Interest in being featured as our Medical Director on website and marketing materials
• Relationships with aesthetic product representatives (Allergan, Galderma, Revance)
Compensation
• Monthly retainer: $2,500–$5,000/month depending on experience and scope of involvement
• Part-time commitment: estimated 4–8 hours/month (on-site visits, chart reviews, phone availability)
• Additional compensation available for any on-site treatments or consultations performed
• This is a 1099 independent contractor arrangement
Time Commitment
• On-site visits: 1–2 times per month if possible (chart review, staff meetings, observation)
• Phone/electronic availability: during operating hours (9 AM–8 PM, 6 days/week) for clinical questions or emergencies
• Protocol review: as needed when new services or devices are introduced
• This role is designed to complement an existing practice—it will not interfere with your primary clinical work
Key Responsibilities
- Provide medical oversight for all aesthetic procedures performed, including neurotoxin injections, dermal fillers, biostimulators, PRF/EZ Gel treatments, Pico laser, microneedling, and medical-grade chemical peels
Qualifications
- Active Illinois MD, DO, or APRN (with full practice authority) license in good standing (required)
